Secondary Education, 5-9 Gr, 7-12 Gr, BA

The secondary education major with a focus on grades 5-9 is intended for students planning to teach middle school. It is foundational, integrated, relevant, personal and challenging. Students are encouraged to take advantage of study abroad and May/June terms opportunities around the world.

This major consists of 34-44 credits of departmental courses, depending on content major and/or minor declared. Students must declare a second major in one of the following content areas:

Professional


Students with a content major in music (instrumental or vocal) or special education do not take EDUC 287 .

Students with a content major in music (instrumental or vocal), physical and health education, special education, or visual arts do not take EDUC 320 .

Secondary Methods


The methods course taken will depend on the student’s content major. Students with a content major in music (instrumental or vocal), physical and health education, or visual arts will complete methods as part of the requirements of that major.

Student Teaching in Middle School (10 credits)


Students with a content major in music (instrumental or vocal), physical and health education, special education, or visual arts take EDUC 480 . Everyone else takes EDUC 481 .
