Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Majors and Minors

In partnership with the Hope College Education Department, the Music Department offers a P-12 instrumental music teaching major for certification through the Michigan Department of Education. The major consists of 74 credits.

In addition, students must also declare the 44-credit secondary education (no grade band) major, Secondary Education, BA . P-12 music education students will earn a Bachelor of Music degree only.

Anchor Plan for K-12 Bachelor of Music

The Bachelor of Music degree has a modified set of Anchor Plan requirements:

  • The Arts in Practice requirement will be met with courses required for the major.
  • BMU students take one Human Creative Perspectives course and one Historical Perspectives course (first course at the 100 level; second course at the 200-level). They do not need to take a Philosophical Perspectives course.
  • The Mathematics and Natural Science requirement is 6-7 credits: one Mathematics course, and one Natural Science with Lab course.
  • BMU students take one Social Science course, instead of two.

Ensembles (4 credits and 7 courses)

Ensembles must include 1 credit of vocal ensembles and 3 credits of instrumental ensembles. Students must take an ensemble each semester on their primary instrument. Ensemble placements are by audition for appropriate placement. Keyboard students may audition for large ensemble placement on their primary or secondary instrument per their applied teacher and appropriate ensemble director for all 7 semesters.

Vocal Ensembles (1 credit)

Instrumental Ensembles (3 credits)

Private Instruction (14 credits)

  • Any MUSA course, but all 14 credits must be taken in the same instrument.
