Sport Studies Minor

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Majors and Minors

Sport Studies is a minor program in which students will explore the role of sport in the human experience. The guiding question is a twist on a quote from the late Trinidadian scholar and political/cultural activist C.L.R. James: What do they know of sport who only sport know? Students will explore sport as the basis for interpersonal and community connection, but also for turmoil and conflict; sport as an enterprise for driving culture, but also reflecting entrenched social norms; sport as the basis for personal growth and expanding opportunities, but also for moral degradation and the reinforcement of inequalities. While this program relies heavily on the liberal arts to ask questions and seek answers about sport, community, humanity, and God, students in the program will also obtain practical experience through research projects, industry-based projects, and connecting with professionals and college alumni working in sport. In conjunction with their academic major, students may prepare for careers in any variety of growing industries related to youth, school, college, recreational, or professional sport, or any profession in which the specific focus could be within the world of sport. Thus, graduates will have knowledge and understanding of the complex and multifaceted nature of sport and its impact on cultures, communities, and lives.

The Sports Studies minor consists of 21.5 credits.
