World Languages and Cultures

The Department of World Languages and Cultures (DWLC) seeks to provide undergraduate students communicative competence in a second language, greater understanding of and appreciation for other cultures, insight into the human experience of other peoples, intellectual development through enhanced cognitive and analytical skills, and the integration of these experiences with liberal arts into a world view which encompasses the historic Christian faith.

About The Programs

Our department offers six major programs, and instruction in seven different languages: Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Latin, and Spanish. The two primary student learning outcomes for all DWLC major programs are (1) language proficiency and (2) cultural competency. As a result, the DWLC plays an important role in meeting Hope College’s mission by equipping our students with the essential knowledge and experiences to live effective “lives of leadership and service in a global society.”

Courses in the DWLC also fulfill a number of Anchor Plan requirements. Language courses at or above the second semester fulfill the Global Language requirement, and several of our courses in history, literature, and culture fulfill requirements such as Historical Perspectives, Human Creative Perspectives, and Human Diversities. We have even offered First Year Seminars and Senior Seminars in Spanish!

Study Abroad

The DWLC leads the campus in students studying abroad. Though it is never a requirement, nearly 9 out of 10 DWLC majors go on a study abroad program during their time at Hope. If you are interested in studying abroad, be sure to connect early on with a DWLC faculty member to explore possibilities.

Many courses you take abroad can be counted toward your language major or minor as well as toward Anchor Plan requirements. In some cases, courses abroad can even be counted toward another major or minor here at Hope. Most students target their junior year to go abroad for a semester, but many students study earlier or later than that. Before you finalize any plans, it is important that you meet with your DWLC faculty advisor to make sure your study abroad courses will fulfill the requirements you need them to fulfill, and to verify the number of credits you may count toward your language major or minor. Note that different language programs accept different numbers of credits from study abroad programs. This is due in part to (1) the number of advanced courses offered on campus in each language, and (2) the number of courses offered in each language that count toward the Anchor Plan requirements.
