PHYS 362 - Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics

The prominent states of matter are examined from classical and quantum mechanical points of view. A thorough overview of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics is given. Nonidealities in gases are treated in order to examine cooling and phase transitions. Effects of Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics are detailed for gases, liquids and solids. Slightly degenerate perfect gases, electrons in metals and Bose-condensation, viewed as a first order phase transition, are discussed.
