ENVR 101 - Introduction to Environmental Studies: Home, Harm, Healing

This course is an introduction to the study of environmental issues, primarily from the perspective of the humanities. We will trace the development of environmental thought since about 1850, with an emphasis on the American context after World War 2, particularly in response to environmental impacts. We will study how environmental thinkers have analyzed the roots of ecological crises; competing ecological worldviews; and debates over the role of technology, colonialism, climate change, and faith. Topics will include conservation, the environmental movement, sustainability, creation care/stewardship, and environmental justice. Beyond learning about the development of environmental thought, we will consider what we can learn from it today as it applies to addressing pressing environmental problems and wrestling with enduring environmental questions that pertain to our lives.
