COMM 241 - Sport Communication

This course will highlight the cultural influence of communication about sports on society. It explores how communication enables cultural meaning and values to become associated and established within sports, and exposes students to the ways that factors such as race, gender and nationality manifest and perpetuate via communication about the sporting landscape. This course will also cover fundamentals of sports media including social media and traditional media broadcasts, information sharing, exploration of popular media theory through sport, and the review of current events impacting how sport is consumed. Sports journalism will also be a focus, as this industry is changing rapidly due to the downfall of traditional newspapers and the increase of subscription-based journalism and alternate media outlets.
