ART 245 - Introduction to the Arts of the Islamic World


A period survey (lecture, discussion, readings, hands-on projects, field trips, and research) of Islamic culture from the 7th through 17th centuries, including painting, sculpture, architecture, as well as portable objects such as ceramics, ivory, calligraphy, and illuminated manuscripts. Questions such as the role of art in religious, court, and secular culture, figural and non-figural art, gardens, ornaments, and Islamic aesthetics will be explored. Art 111 is highly recommended prior to this course. ART 111  is highly recommended prior to this course.
