ENGL 210 - English Literature Themes II


Themed courses at the intermediate level will focus on the exploration of a theme or topic in the development of the literature. The course will explore expressions of the human condition in literary forms, and the selected readings will equip students with the knowledge and skills to incorporate research effectively and innovatively, write successfully across genres, and use tools of literary analysis to interpret course readings.The courses will examine genre conventions in works of literature and will offer a more in-depth study of literary concepts and critical theory for close reading. Courses that could be offered in Fall 2023 include Pilgrims & Pilgrimage; Peace & Justice in Young Adult Literature; Migration in Latinx Diaspora Literature; and The Girl in Fiction. In Spring 2024, course offerings could include Race & Justice in Young Adult Literature; Colonialism to Post-Independence: Africa & the Caribbean; and Environmental Humanities . Students will do two (2) or more significant academic writing assignments that total at least 20 pages, and at least one (1) of these is a thesis-driven assignment that integrates research and demonstrates information literacy. The writing process will include drafting and revising.
