ENGL 160 - English Literature Authors I


Author courses at the introductory level will focus on the study of major works of authors and situate those works within a specific timeframe in the development of the literature. The course will explore expressions of the human condition in literary forms. The selected readings will equip students with the knowledge and skills to write creatively and critically and collaborate effectively in reading and writing communities. The courses will introduce students to literary genres, genre conventions, and literary concepts for close reading. Topics may include: J.R.R. Tolkien and Medieval Literature; Ernest Hemingway: Film & Fiction; The Poetics of Hip-Hop; Engaging the Graphic Novel; C.S. Lewis & the Liberal Arts; The African Novel; Stephen King: Trash or Talent. Students will engage in reflective and/or analytical writing (at least 10 pages, collectively, including drafts, free writing, reader responses, journaling etc.) to develop a deeper understanding of thoughts, experiences, and creations. Attention will be paid to the thesis, organization, and structure.
