ENGL 130 - Survey of English Literature I


Survey courses at the introductory level will focus on periods and movements in the development of the literature. The course will explore expressions of the human condition in literary forms. The selected readings will equip students with the knowledge and skills to write creatively and critically and collaborate effectively in reading and writing communities. The courses will introduce students to literary genres, genre conventions, and literary concepts for close reading. Topics may include: Film & Fiction; Rebooting the Classics; Peace & Justice in the Latin Hemispheres; Colonialism, Literature, and the Human Condition; Magical Worlds in Children’s Fiction; Love and Violence in Ancient Literature from Virgil to Dante. Students will engage in reflective and/or analytical writing (at least 10 pages, collectively, including drafts, free writing, reader responses, journaling etc.) to develop a deeper understanding of thoughts, experiences, and creations. Attention will be paid to the thesis, organization, and structure.
