ENGL 110 - English Literature Themes


Themed courses at the introductory level will focus on the exploration of a theme or topic in the development of the literature. The course will explore expressions of the human condition in literary forms. The selected readings will equip students with the knowledge and skills to write creatively and critically and to collaborate effectively in reading and writing communities. The courses will introduce students to literary genres, genre conventions, and literary concepts for close reading. Topics may include: Migration and Return in African Diaspora Literature; Magical Realism in Latinx Diaspora Literature; Apocalyptic Anxieties in Literature; Personal Essay; Rebooting the Classics; Marriage in the Modern Age; or Speak of the Devil. Students will engage in reflective and/or analytical writing (at least 10 pages, collectively, including drafts, free writing, reader responses, journaling etc.) to develop a deeper understanding of thoughts, experiences, and creations. Attention will be paid to the thesis, organization, and structure.
