FREN 442 - Modern France in the Making This course explores Francophone literature and culture of French-speaking societies in Africa and the Americas. It focuses on issues such as decolonization, the search for cultural and linguistic identity, the clash of modern society with traditional values, and the situation of women. Readings will be selected from the works of Cesaire, Fanon, Chamoiseau, Djebar, Conde, Schwartz-Bart, Hebert, Oyono, and Zobel. Prerequisites: two 300-level courses in French, placement, or equivalent.
