ENGL 280 - American Literature I A historical and cultural study of American literature from colonization through the Civil War. Focuses on major works and authors (e.g., Cabeza de Vaca, Bradstreet, Wheatley, Franklin, Irving, Douglass, Poe, Thoreau, Melville, Hawthorne, Whitman, Dickinson, Stowe) and major genres, forms, and literary periods (e.g., autobiography, poetry, short stories, the Enlightenment, Transcendentalism, Sentimentalism).
