HIST 288 - Global History of Medicine This course will introduce students to the history of medicine from a global perspective and from the ancient times to the present. We will ask the following questions: How do we use historical methods to study the development of “Western” traditions of medicine? What are the origins of public health and healthcare systems in modern societies? How did concepts of health and illness change over time in different parts of the world (e.g., in the Middle East, and in East Asia)? How do we compare, globally and historically, different traditions of medicine? Why is this comparison important for our understanding of medicine today? In this class, we will practice writing and revising drafts of the final paper, which will be about a big question historical topic.
