Music Education K-12, Vocal, BMU

In partnership with the Hope College Education Department, the Music Department offers a K-12 vocal music teaching major for certification through the Michigan Department of Education. The major consists of 73 credits.

In addition, students must also declare one of the 44-credit secondary education teaching majors: Secondary Education, 5-9 Gr, 7-12 Gr, BA  (for a middle school focus) or Secondary Education, 7-12 Gr, 5-9 Gr, BA  (for a high school focus). K-12 music education students will earn a Bachelor of Music degree only.

Anchor Plan for K-12 Bachelor of Music


The Bachelor of Music degree has a modified set of Anchor Plan requirements:

  • The Arts in Practice requirement will be met with courses required for the major.
  • BMU students take one Human Creative Perspectives course and one Historical Perspectives course (first course at the 100 level; second course at the 200-level). They do not need to take a Philosophical Perspectives course.
  • The Mathematics and Natural Science requirement is 6-7 credits: one Mathematics course, and one Natural Science with Lab course.

Choose one of the three groups of courses, listed below: 14 credits of voice; 14 credits of piano and 4 semesters of voice; or 14 credits of organ and 4 semesters of voice.
