The Religion, Biblical Studies major introduces students to the Bible and the discipline of engaging with scriptural texts in their historical context. Students will learn to become skilled readers of the narratives, laws, poetry, and oracles that shaped the self-understanding of ancient Israel, Judaism, and Christianity. Students will become attentive to the sophistication and artistry of scriptural texts. They will engage with the diversity of the biblical witness, both internally and its varied interpretations over the centuries. Students will emerge from this major with a solid foundation in the scriptural narrative, skill in applying a range of interpretive approaches to the text, and a solid grasp of the history of biblical scholarship. Students are encouraged, but not required, to gain facility in one of the primary languages of biblical scholarship (Hebrew and/or Greek).
