TEACHER CERTIFICATION: In partnership with the Hope College Department of Education, the Department of World Languages and Cultures offers a teaching major in German for certification through the State of Michigan. Students planning to teach a foreign language at the secondary level must meet all requirements of the Education Department upon being formally admitted to the Teacher Education program in addition to those of the language department (see the Education Department and Department of World Languages and Cultures websites).
Teacher candidates are required to spend at least one semester in a German-speaking country. They are also required to pass an oral proficiency exam at the advanced low level prior to graduation, which they are advised to take directly after returning from their study abroad semester.

Requirements for the 32 credit German teaching major are:
- 4 credits of Teaching World Languages K-12 (EDUC 388 /EDUC 389 ). This course is considered pedagogy and is not part of the 32 credit major.
28 credits in German at the 300-level and above
