BIOL 316 - Aquatic Ecosystems

What attributes of aquatic ecosystems make them ideal systems to study ecological and evolutionary principles? How do humans -and other animals- “engineer” entire ecosystems and connect distant food webs? How do managers navigate difficult goals such as protecting vulnerable species and prevent further spread of aquatic invasive species? Scientists within (and beyond) academia are providing answers to these complex questions using over a century of scientific knowledge in aquatic ecology and evolution, unparalleled technological tools, and interdisciplinary teamwork. This in-person course explores these questions and more, as we scrutinize major topics in the study of life within aquatic ecosystems all the way from an organismal lens to the global biosphere-level perspective.
