This course surveys male and female gender roles in the Ancient Near East, Greece, and Rome. It examines questions of patriarchy/matriarchy, marriage patterns, and attitudes toward sexuality displayed in the literature and art of those cultures. Attention is given to problems of methodology and modern interpretation of ancient sources on this subject, including the Old and New Testaments. Students will learn to select and interpret a variety of historical sources, and to construct a clear argument supported by evidence. Cross-listed with HIST 285 .
