REL 160 - Christ and the Self

This course will explore the nature of the self and identity in popular thought and in Christian theology. The central existential questions of contemporary people relate to the existence and formation of the self: Who am I? Where do I belong? What makes me unique? In Christian thought, the starting point for thinking about the self has been the person of Jesus. Through the encounter with classic and contemporary reflection on Jesus, and in conversation with perspectives on the self in social and developmental psychology, students will consider whether this ancient faith provides distinct answers to these very contemporary questions.
