ENGL 260 - English Literature Authors II

Author courses at the intermediate level will focus on the study of major works of authors and situate those works within a specific timeframe in the development of the literature. The course will explore expressions of the human condition in literary forms, and the selected readings will equip students with the knowledge and skills to incorporate research effectively and innovatively, write successfully across genres, and use tools of literary analysis to interpret course readings. The courses will examine genre conventions in works of literature and will offer a more in-depth study of literary concepts and critical theory for close reading. Topics may include: Strange Pain: Listening to Women; US/Latino Writers of Today; Harry Potter & Virtue Ethics; Latin American Women Writers; Chinua Achebe: Revisiting the Heart of Darkness. Students will do two (2) or more significant academic writing assignments that total at least 20 pages, and at least one (1) of these is a thesis-driven assignment that integrates research and demonstrates information literacy. The writing process will include drafting and revising.
